Bibi-Khanym Mosque

One of the vivid samples of Central Asian architecture is the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, build by the order of Tamerlane in 1404 in Samarkand. The name of the building is literally translated as “Elder sister”. The mosque was constructed in course of five years by the thousands of best masters from various countries. It was being built during the aggressive campaign of Tamerlane to India and that is why the construction process was controlled by his elder wife Saray-Mulk-Khanym, in honor of which the mosque was named. Throughout centuries the building maintained its greatness. From the Afrosiyob hill one can see an unforgettable panoramic view of the surrounding and high domes of Bibi-Khanym Mosque.

Mausoleum of Khodja Daniyar

Mausoleum of Khodja Daniyar is located on the hills of Afrasiab close to the healing springs. According to archives, the ancient mausoleum was built in the honor of prophet, respected by three world religions: Christianity, Islam and Judaism. His name was Khodja Daniyar or Daniil. Sources from Bible say that Tamerlane brought remnants of the prophet to Samarkand and on the spot of their burial in the XIV century built a mausoleum. Until today the mausoleum of Khodja Daniyar attracts pilgrims and tourists from all over the world.

Gur-Emir Mausoleum

Gur-Emir Mausoleum – one of the main sightseeings of Samarkand. This majestic building was constructed in 1404 in honor of Central Asian ruler of Amir Temur (Tamerlane). The mausoleum conceals in itself gravestones, one of them being the gravestone of Tamerlane. It was made of world’s biggest piece of nephritis. The real sarcophagi are located on the basement of the building. This place is surrounded with many legends, according one of which, those who disturb the rest of the conqueror, will undergo suffering and death. The imprecation is carved on the gravestone. Mystical place of Gur-Emir is a unique historical monument of Central Asian architecture.

“Meros” handicraft association

“Meros” handicraft association was founded in Samarkand with the support of UNESCO in 1996. The goals and aims of the organization is preserve and develop traditional handcrafts in Uzbekistan. There are over 50 talented craftsmen, who carefully protect the traditional arts, preserving unique technology of the predecessors. It is well known that the first paper on the territory of Central Asia was made in Samarkand. Thanks to the support by “Meros” handicraft association, now every guest has a unique chance to personally observe the ancient process of paper making in Samarkand village of Koni Gil.

Registan square

Registan square is located in the center of Samarkand and surrounded by famous architectural ensemble which consists of three monuments: Ulugbek Madrasah, Sherdor Madrasah and Tillya-Kari Madrasah. This square throughout centuries gathered citizens to announce orders and news. The name of “Registan” is translated as “place strewed with the sand”. According to archives, exactly from this square Tamerlane’s army departed to the war. After the death of conqueror, the appearance of Registan was filled by madrasahs, which made this place a center of science. This ensemble just like many other sightseeings of Samarkand is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sights.

Ruhabad Mausoleum

Ruhabad Mausoleum was built by the order of Tamerlane on the spot where the respected sheikh and religious activist Sagarji was buried. The name of “Ruhabad” is translated as “resident soul”. The outer look of the mausoleum is simple and does not distinguish itself with rich decoration.However, legends say that a small case with seven hairs of prophet Muhammad is hidden under a small dome of the Rukhabad.

Shahi-Zinda necropolis

Shahi-Zinda necropolis is one of the ancient and mysterious architectural ensembles of Samarkand. The uniqueness of this memorial complex is in the skillful decoration and amazing for these times. Only 11 mausoleums of different dates of construction were preserved until these days. Taking into account all factors, scientists came to the conclusion that this architectural complex reflects 2500 years of great history of the city. Ulugbek’s Observatory

Ulugbek’s Observatory was constructed in 1428 in the suburbs of Samarkand. The project was developed personally by Ulugbek (a grandson of Tamerlane) and his master, great mathematician Kazi-zade Rumi. The observatory is one of the most valuable buildings of its type in the Middle Ages. During the functioning of the observatory, the best Central Asian scientists of that time made an invaluable contribution to the science: they composed a map of stellar sky (GurganianZidj) with the description of over 1000 stars, as well as identified the length of the year on Earth with an exact precision.

Samarkand winery named after Khovrenko

Since ancient times, sunny Samarkand was famous for its vineyards. Each visitor of the city has a unique opportunity to visit legendary wine factory named after Khovrenko. The factory was founded in 1868 by Dmitry Filatov but years after the factory was headed by talented wine-maker Mikhail Khovrenko. Nowadays, Uzbekistan’s best quality of wine is produced here with traditional receipts by applying innovative technologies. Imam al-Bukhari Mausoleum

The mausoleum of Imam al-Bukhari in Samarkand is a very impressive sight. Imam Al-Bukhari was the great theologian of the East. He collected and recorded about 600 thousand hadith, i.e. legend based on cases of life or some sayings of the Prophet. Imam was born in Bukhara in 810 year and ended his life in Samarkand. He was buried in a small village Hartang, 30 km from Samarkand.The mausoleum of Imam al-Bukhari presents in all of its magnificence. In the complex that occupies a vast territory, there are mausoleums, mosques, hotel for tourists and pilgrims, souvenir shops and religious literature.
